So I hunt alot and have some extra meat each year. I usually keep it at my friend's house because he has one of those big deep freezers. I recently bought one of them on craig's list, but its kind of old and seems to be a little run down. It works, but I think it might use alot of energy. Should I use it or get rid of it.

It was a quick ill-planned purchase and I am willing to take my lumps plus I didn't pay hardly anything for it. Just feeling guilty and want some advice or reassurances.

that is really tough. on one hand if you keep it, you will probably suck energy much more than if you just use your friends, but if you throw it out, it ends up in the landfill. You have to drive to the friend's house for the meat and unless that is a normal thing, you are wasting gas, so the freezer at the house makes sense.

off the top of my head, i say keep it and shop around for something newer that maybe meets energy star requirements. i don't think anyone here could argue against that. I would see if you can find an appliance recycler in your area in the meantime so that when you get the newer freezer, this one doesn't end up in a landfill.

eg, Thank you for the advice. I think it makes sense to keep the fridge for now, but I will admit that when it kicks on, it can wake me from a dead sleep. I like the convenience of not having to go somewhere to enjoy the meat that I own. That alone makes this the better choice.

Any suggestions on a deep freeze to "replace" this one with?

I would keep the one you have and just use it for the meat. If it works, why replace it. I don't think its the most ideal, but neither is driving back and forth to the friend's house.

Of-course the freezer uses a lot of energy then other normal GE refrigerators but it does not mean you should get rid of it. If you already have bought freezer then why are you thinking of getting rid of it as the freezer safe your dishes for long time then that of other fridge. I am also thinking of buying the one. But I am also thinking of getting LG LFX25978 24.9 cu refrigerator which have a very nice feature and look.

In your subject you've specified REFRIGERATOR, so if it's a refrigerator and not a freezer, the problem can be with condenser coil underneath the fridge. If you haven't cleaned it up in a while, it is the absolute problem. So just check it and get it cleaned with a vacuum. Me and a friend of mine, both have whirlpool refrigerators and we both got rid of this problem with the same solution.
Don't have much knowledge about freezers but yes, in case of refrigerators it does work.
    Good luck.
