There are some seriously greedy appliances in your home that are hogging A LOT of energy and trust me they are not willing to change their ways anytime soon! Energy hogging appliances are widely known for sucking energy even when not in use, this usually doesn’t end well…The average home has around 24 greedy appliances hogging all the energy! Usually 30% of electricity is wasted by these “energy hoggers”. This is exactly why I chose to put together a list of the worst eco friendly appliances.
1. Your TV:
Yup, your TV takes top spot. If you have a Plasma TV know that it’s probably sucking around 1400 kilowatts hours a year, which I’m sure you know isn’t cheap! So you might as well be throwing your hard earned money into the trash (or you could just give it to me). If your TV isn’t willing to take part in the green movement, you could just unplug it when not in use. Meaning even if you just watch around 4 hours of TV a day it still leaves you with a bill that probably costs a kidney!
What about LCD screens?
They still waste some electricity but not as much as a Plasma TV. LCD TV’s trump Plasma TV’s when it comes to general quality (my opinion) and energy efficiency (fact). So if you have a LCD TV give yourself a pat on the back!
2. Video Game Console:
This is probably a point that gives so many people against video games firepower when in an argument. Consoles such as the popular Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii suck around 300 kilowatt hours annually. Which is probably enough of your hard earned money to buy another video game! If unplugging your console is not an option because sometimes cables at the back of your appliances can be quite terrifying, look for a switch off button behind the console that should do the trick!
3. Your Kettle:
Usually people overfill water in their kettles when boiling water for just an everyday cup of tea. Unfortunately People overlook this, I know I once did. You probably thought you needed to fill up your kettle to make a few cups of tea or coffee, and frequently this ends with you throwing away the water into the drain. So these appliances waste both water and electricity-how greedy can an appliance get! Kettles are known for consuming large amounts of electricity to boil water. So next time you boil water just fill it with enough water, I personally do this by taking the cups I drink with and fill up the kettle accordingly.
4. Laptop:
Energy sucking appliance number four is the laptop. On this one I speak from some unfortunate experiences. Of all my electronics I use my laptop the most (duh). The best move you can make is to unplug your charger as soon as your done, because like TV’s ,laptop chargers still consume electricity when not in use. It’s also dead important that you’re aware of when its done charging, because I’ve had the habit of leaving my laptop charging while I’m using it.
5. DVD Player:
At first I was shocked because I only use my DVD player a few times a week. But to my surprise this appliance loves to suck electricity every day, every week and every year!
Expect to have 85 kilowatts put to waste at the end of the year. So treat it like every other greedy appliance , unplug it! So basically you only plug it in when you’re about to watch your favorite flick for the 100th time!
6. The Infamous Cell Phone Charger:
The amount of electricity wasted by a cell phone charger isn’t huge (duh). But electricity put to waste all adds up to piece of paper with a lot of numbers at the end of the month. Cell Phone chargers are the simplest items to unplug which I’m sure you do already.
I hope this has made you more aware of the wasteful appliances in you could have in your house.
Here’s to you going green!
