    Hi,

We're a group of Engineers at a summer school course in Denmark, Innovation and Business Design, who have come up with the idea of having one big cooling system installed that feeds all the refrigerators in the building, instead of having a fridge in each flat.

The physical concept behind our idea is that one big refrigerator will be less energy consuming than the sum of the energy consumptions of all the small fridges in the building. At the same time, heat created in the cooling process will allow householders to save in their heating systems.

Furthermore, wind turbines on top of the building will be able to create more energy, and hopefully the whole building will be able to generate more energy than it consumes.

Due to this fact the energy saving will lead to an obvious shrink down of the pollution. So the feeling of environmental care from our customers will be a key factor in the development of our product.

This is very rough, but what do immediately think of the idea?

It would help us very much if you spend 2-3 minutes answering the following survey:

    Thank you =)

So is your central "fridge" unit at basement levels? How do you overcome natural thermodynamic flows to get the cooling up to the upper floors? I kind of look at it like transmission loads on electrical lines. In theory, you are probably right that "centralizing" refrigeration on this scale would be more efficient but at such heights, wouldn't you be losing much of the benefit to "transporting" the cooling?

    Thanks for the reply,
The central "fridge" unit is supposed to be placed on the top of the building, exactly to make use of the natural thermodynamic flow.
We thought of using some kind of liquid instead of air, but have not really done any researching in this area yet.

Sorry. I couldn't tell from the graphic where the central "fridge" unit would be. I think a liquid or something like freon is going to be a double edged sword. You are going to increase your capacity over air but are going to lose the benefit of not needing to pump the air through the cycle. With air, I would think that you could pull in fresh air, cool it and send it through the system, but with a coolant, you would have to have a continuous loop.

I do wonder if air will have enough cooling power to handle this building though. That's a lot of refrigeration to rely purely on air.

Hi, nice one! seems like a great idea. But can you please more enlighten me why is that big refrigerator consume less energy than the small ones? well, you come up with something really helpful and beneficial.
