According to the EIA (Energy Information Administration) many of the indicators of global pollution fell in 2008. This could be good news and some see that trends in fuel prices and consumer awareness may be pushing us away from the use of fossil fuels.

So, its a temporary downshift. As soon as people in developed nations see a reduction in gas prices, we will rise again. I just don't see consumer awareness as having such an immediate impact.

People are slow to change unless there are strong motivations to do so. For example, having children may motivate someone to quit smoking. The same is true with consumer behaviors. If prices are within reason and goods readily available, people will not just stop buying them out of ethical obligation.

There is also an issue of people becoming accustomed to higher prices. $2 plus for gas would have slowed driving and usage extremely in the early 80s but today, its below what the market will bear. Prices can rise, but people will adapt and continue unless there is a deterrent that is only overcome by cessation of the behavior.
