I have been reading a little bit about how to store food from one season to the next. I ran across information on root cellaring one's food. I had heard the term before but had no idea that people were still practicing it. It involves creating an in earth (under ground) "cave" with a temperature regulated by the earth and using this space to store food products for longer periods of time without the need for mechanical refrigeration.
Has anyone ever seen a modern root cellar? Does anyone here actually do this? I am just curious. In this day and age of food bacteria scares and the likes, I don't see many people going this way.

I know my grandmother did this on her farm in Iowa, but I didn't know anyone was still doing it. I mean with the relative cheapness of refrigeration and electricity over the past 30-40 years, I don't think many people held on to the tradition.
