I love these things. They are beautiful. Not the natural beauty of granite, but they have such great variety in patterns and colors. I know there are quite a few companies hopping on the bandwagon and making this product. Has anyone had experience with this product type. I love mine.

I have Vetrazzo countertops and I LOVE them. The light just sparkles on them and I have even thought about ways to make it so I could underlight them. Anyone tried that? I think these are great products and with the over abundance of glass waste in this country, the sky is the limit on the patterns and colors that can be created.

Does anyone know what they use for the cementitious material that fills in around the glass. I understand that the glass is typically either post-consumer or pre-consumer recycled content, but I have never been able to find out the make-up of the rest of the components.

I tried to find that out once myself and all I ever got from the manufacturer is that its a proprietary blend of virgin and recycled materials. I wanted to know so I could determine of the product was 100% recyclable. They claim it to be but they couldn't tell me what was in the cement.

I heard somewhere that they use fly ash and organic compounds to create the cement. Its only 10-15% of the countertop and therefore you know that at least 85-90% should be recyclable as glass. Isn't that enough?

I've been trying to get my wife to agree to get rid of the old particle board (laminated) countertops we have and replace them with recycled glass, but she says she doesn't like them. She says they look cheap. I keep telling her that they aren't but she tells me that that's not the point. Oh well. Some people see it and others don't.

Maybe your could suggest some of the other alternatives. Quite frankly some quartz countertops aren't that bad. Sure you can rail against mining and you would be right. Another thing I have seen is compressed paper and wood board products. They are really dense but don't have the great wear and tear of stone or other materials.

I would put on the options on the table and see if you can't convince her that recycled glass is the way to go.

We recently renovated our whole house, and did look at recycled glass. It is comparable to granite in price and durability. We went with granite because we got a deal on it, but I would do glass in a heartbeat! It's awesome!! We also looked in to poured concrete, since DH's dad can do cement work. This is also a durable, very cool looking route to go. Good luck, and definitely show us what he decides to get!
