So I was watching an episode (rerun) of Renovation Nation and I saw an installation of thin film solar. It seems like a great innovation in convenience and installation, but I wonder if it is worth the cost. From what I have read, you still don't save much money versus the larger crystal PVs, and you get a great reduction in efficiency.

So why go with thin film at this point?

I know the product, but the savings with some systems is sort of hidden. Most crystaline PV panels must be attached to the roof on rails through a certified installer. This comes at a pretty high cost, but with thin film, you will save substantially on installation. This needs to be figured into the cost and payback of both systems. Sure the technology still isn't where it needs to be, but for certain applications, especially those in neighborhoods with strict HOAs, this could be the right product.

I think its worth it. I am all for new technology and innovation. The only question I have is lifespan of the materials. If it lasts longer than the big panels then it pays itself back and then some. All in all though I think that solar pv collection is still a few years from mass market viability.
